Ockham's Razor... Strip back to simplest terms.
"Ockham's razor - the simplest explanation is that someone scr*wed up."
Dr Greg House, House
Ockham's razor is an ABC radio show based on a scientific principle named after William of Ockham, a 12th Century Franciscan Friar.
It says "All other things being equal, the simplest explanation is the most likely." That is, cut away unneccessary assumptions to reveal the simplest answer to a problem.
It's not always right (some things are a little more complicated), but it makes a great starting point. Begin with the simplest, most likely explanation, and work your way from there.
